ioBudget
An easy-to-use budgeting framework for humans.
Your books, on the web. Entity → Tax Class → Category → Entry, pivoted by month, quarter, or year — the same pivot grid you already trust, now in the browser with exact money, Excel export, and team accounts.
The grid is the app
One page. Your whole financial year, pivoted. Rows are your hierarchy with subtotal rows and a GRAND TOTAL; columns are time buckets. Nothing is ever hidden — rows always reconcile, filters only change the amounts.

Illustrative data. Entity / Tax Class / Category rows carry stable pastel tints; entry rows inherit a lighter shade of their category.
Built for real books
Every feature comes from years of doing actual bookkeeping the way accountants think about it — not the way apps guess.
A pivot grid that mirrors your spreadsheet
Four collapsible levels — Entity → Tax Class → Category → Entry — with subtotal rows, a GRAND TOTAL, Excel-style column letters, merged-cell display, and a three-tier pinned header. Switch the X-axis between Month, Quarter, and Year without losing your place.
Money that is always exact
Amounts are stored as true NUMERIC(18,2) and computed in integer cents — never floating point.
What you see is what reconciles: subtotals sum, signs behave (net = income − expense), and your year-end
numbers match to the penny.
Edit at the speed of thought
Double-click any entry cell to type a new amount. Right-click to add or re-date an occurrence on a calendar bounded to that bucket, open a popover of the entries behind any subtotal, or copy cells straight into Excel with ⌘C.
Excel out, exactly as displayed
One click exports the grid as you see it — grouping, font size, row tints and all — plus a flat Detail sheet of every dated occurrence for your accountant or your own pivot tables.
Bring your Mac books with you
Import your .iobudget archives from the macOS app in one click, and download a
.iobudget backup of any web book anytime. Your data is portable — it always has been.
Start from a catalog, not a blank page
Every new entity is preseeded with a complete, editable tax-class and category skeleton aligned to IRS guidance:
- Business entities — 28 tax classes / 73 categories aligned to IRS Publication 334, plus modern refinements like HOSTING, SUBSCRIPTIONS, and CONTRACT LABOR.
- Personal entities — 19 classes / 71 categories aligned to Form 1040 Schedule A and Pub 502/525/527/530/550/561 — medical, charitable, rental, residence, student loan, and household tracking.
- Expense or income is decided per category — right-click to flip a category, and every entry under it follows. Category names render dark red for expense, dark green for income.
- Run business and personal entities side by side in one book, each with its own fiscal years.

One account, your whole household or team
- Owner, collaborator, guest roles — guests read the books, never change them.
- Multiple accounts for one person: switch between your business and personal subscriptions from the top bar.
- Sign in with your EAFX account — registration, passwords, invitations, Single & Team licensing, and PayPal billing all live in one place at id.eafx.net.
- If a subscription lapses, your books stay safe and read-only — renew and pick up right where you left off.
Dependable by design
ioBudget runs as a load-balanced web app with your data in managed PostgreSQL — not in a browser tab.
Your work is never lost
Every change is saved to the server as you make it, with optimistic version checks so two people never overwrite each other. A nightly full database backup is the whole-app safety net.
Fast, wherever you are
Two app instances behind a load balancer, cluster workers on every core, and a custom-built grid that stays smooth on real-size books. No desktop to carry, no installer to run.
Private by default
Your books belong to your account. Access follows your membership — nothing is shared, sold, or mined. Guests see exactly what you invite them to see, read-only.

Do your books
Double-click cells to enter amounts, right-click to date occurrences, filter by kind, and export to Excel at year end.
Questions, answered
Why “one fiscal year per book”?
It keeps every archive, export, and backup small and unambiguous — a book is exactly one year of one set of books, and a book can hold several entities (business and personal) for that year. Most people keep one book per year per situation and open last year’s whenever they need it.
Does ioBudget connect to my bank?
No — and deliberately so. Every entry is a manual, dated occurrence you control. ioBudget is the framework that makes manual bookkeeping fast and legible, not another set of credentials to hand out.
Can I still use the macOS app?
The Mac app is frozen at version 1.1.7 and fully supported by its .iobudget files — but all new
development happens on the web. Import your archives at app.iobudget.com and keep working where you left off.
What happens to my books if I stop subscribing?
They go read-only, not away. You can still view and export everything, download .iobudget backups,
and reactivate anytime to resume editing.
How is billing handled?
Entirely through EAFX at id.eafx.net — plans, seats, PayPal billing, and invitations. ioBudget itself never touches your payment details.
Your books deserve better than a flat spreadsheet
